"The Luminous Eye: What do artists see?"

Beginning with the drawings of Shay Docking this lecture will explore the process of looking and playful interpretation that goes on as artists observe the world. Considering the way artists use drawing, photography and other research techniques will give us insight into what artists see, what they leave out and what they invent, in an effort to respond to the world which they observe. Artists give us evidence of their wonder, anguish, humour and delight in seeing the world their eye inhabits.

History Week 2011 brings to the table the edible, appetising, tasty history of food. Who ate what and where? How did we cook and where did our food come from? History Week 2011 will be a smorgasbord of delectable delights.

EAT History is the theme of History Week 2011’s exhibitions, talks and dining experiences. Join chefs, gastronomers and food historians to discover the morsels of our past.

Milkshakes were originally a health food. Ingredients included fruit, cream, butter, eggs, chocolate, honey, caramel, malt, yeast, and rum. No ice cream or artificial flavours. According to Macquarie University historian, Leonard Janiszewski, milkshakes were popularised through milk bars, initially created in Sydney in 1932 by a Greek known as Mick Adams. Adams’ refreshment revolution became an Australian and international food-catering icon. Janiszewski’s lecture will explain how.

Celebrate Diversity Week!

Lecture: Photonics in Art and Cultural Heritage Conservation:
Connecting David and the Dreaming

Art Gallery, E11A
Monday 1 August from 5:30pm – 7pm

One of the many ways science serves art is by generating research-based knowledge for the diagnosis, preservation and conservation of art and cultural heritage. This lecture focuses on the photonic sciences in providing tools to diagnose and treat conservation problems. Examples include the laser scanning and laser cleaning of the statue of David, and early stage research on conservation problems in Aboriginal bark paintings and other artefacts unique to Australia being carried out at Macquarie University.

Professor Deb Kane from the Department of Physics and Astronomy has been over a broad range of areas in laser physics, incoherent light sources, and the application of these lasers and sources in spectroscopy, optical metrology, communications and interactions with materials.

All welcome. Light refreshments available.

India’s Secret Heritage - a Tale of Two Cities

What is 'hidden history' and why is it so secret?

Prof. Jane Chapman, one of the curators of the Macquarie University Art Gallery exhibition India - Past , Present and Abroad talks about the aspects of India’s recent past that still need to be uncovered by historians, and how she and her team of researchers produced some of the findings presented in this exhibition.

Using a visual presentation, she will reveal why the two cities featured here were selected, what researchers found as part of their detective job, and why it is important for India today.

Her own experiences of finding out and writing about women’s history and how disempowered people used newspapers to communicate, will be explained within the context of wider issues not only about India, but about lessons from the past, the importance of heritage and archive conservation for future citizenship.

Light refreshments will be served.

‘What cannot be spoken is the space between visible and invisible, and public and private.’

Silent spaces existing in-between have been, and continue to be, the source of inspiration for many artists, philosophers, writers and scientists, whose work has relied upon its sustaining effects – to gather, ponder and think. Creative spaces are silent, they promise to liberate the mind and senses for reflection reaching towards new understandings. This exhibition will explore the intensity of silence in its various forms - silence as integral to healing, power and an understanding of the human condition and its relationship with nature. Furthermore, Silent Spaces will explore the mordant effects of the political silences that continue to hinder our society. Artists involved in the exhibition will be detailing silence through a variety of mediums and techniques evidencing the creative process between the unspoken and the known.
